A member of the public noticed two men experiencing difficulty in a strong rip current at unpatrolled Frazer Park beach in the Munmorah State Conservation Area.
They pulled both the men from the water unconscious and called emergency services about 1.30pm. Police, paramedics, a Surf Life Saving NSW Inflatable Rescue Boat and two jetskis, crewed by volunteer lifesavers, were launched from nearby patrolled beach locations - Catherine Hill Bay and The Lakes raced to the scene. Surf Life Saving Duty Officers were also tasked to the incident, as was the Westpac Rescue Helicopter.
Police said CPR was conducted on both men but the elder, 55, died at the scene. The 20-year-old man was taken to John Hunter Hospital.
"It was a devastating scene this afternoon," NSW Ambulance Inspector Phil Clark said.
"Bystanders and police officers did an extraordinary job assisting both patients before paramedics arrived. They did a great job under very difficult circumstances.
"We need to be mindful of where we are swimming and understanding our limits as we head into the peak of the summer season."
Surf Life Saving NSW director of lifesaving, Joel Wiseman said it was a difficult situation for all involved, made more challenging due to the isolation of the area.
"I would like to acknowledge the efforts of the community members who rescued the men and raised the alarm. They placed their lives at risk to rescue these men," he said.
"Our thoughts and sincere sympathies go out to the family and friends of the father and son at this very sad time."
Tuggerah Lakes police said they were investigating the incident and would prepare a report for the coroner.
