Police were called to a popular cycleway that connects Blackalls Park and Toronto about 5.30pm.
Two teens found the Blackalls Park man face down on the banks of a tributary into Stony Creek and called police.
Early reports from the scene suggested the man may have come off his bicycle and hit his head.
He was not wearing a helmet.
Other reports suggest the man may have had a medical condition that could have contributed to the accident.
Crime scene investigators were last night still on the scene.
Lake Macquarie duty officer Darryn Cox said the death was not suspicious.
‘‘It appears he’s come off his push bike and crashed into a small drain, possibly hitting his head.’’
It was unlikely the man’s body was there long, he said, with many cyclists regularly passing along the track.
