The 39-year-old man suffered critical head injuries after he was involved in a collision with a vehicle on Lambton Road about 5.15pm on March 27.
Police said the man was riding east along Lambton Road and was attempting to make a right hand turn into Lang Street when he was struck by an oncoming Hyundai Excel.
The man was launched off his bike and into a power pole.
The P-plater driver of the Hyundai, a 17-year-old from Wangi Wangi, has provided police with a version of events and undertaken mandatory blood and urine tests.
The accident was one of five involving cyclists in the Hunter in a week.
Newcastle City police are investigating.
