Isaac Brumaghim reckoned he’d struck it lucky as the hefty tuna took his bait and he hauled it to the surface, no doubt with a delicious dinner in mind.
But just as he did, a three-metre tiger shark launched into the air, teeth gnashing, and attempted to snatch the flapping fish for itself.
‘‘Whoaa! Holy shit!’’ the fisherman shouted as the circled back beneath the vessel, leaving the kayak and Mr Brumaghim rocking.
The amazing scene was captured when Mr Brumaghim was fishing recently off the coast of Oahu, the third largest of the Hawaiian islands.
In another close encounter closer to home yesterday, ’ a 1.5-metre bull shark was reportedly chased onto the sands of Noosa’s Main Beach by a bigger shark.
Surf Lifesaving Queensland regional manager Aaron Purchase said members of the public noticed the creature near the tidemark just after 7am.
’’ He said the beach was closed as lifeguards mounted a search on jet skis. But after about two hours and no evidence of another shark, the search was called off and the beach was reopened.
“It’s not a super regular thing to see a bull shark beach itself,” Mr Purchase said. “But if you’re being chased by a bigger shark, you’ve only got so many place you can go.”’’’’
