The 19-year-old Jets midfielder was presented with the award at the Johnny Warren Medal dinner at the Hilton in Sydney on Monday night for her sublime strike against Perth Glory away in round 11.

‘‘I was in complete shock,’’ van Egmond said on Tuesday.

‘‘I can’t really remember the goal too much except that the keeper was off her line and I decided to hit it over her head.

‘‘I think I was on the edge of the 18-yard box.’’

According to the report in the Herald, van Egmond dazzled the Glory defenders with her footwork before curling a shot into the top right corner.

It was a disappointing season for the Jets, but they made a stunning comeback in the final round to draw 3-all with Melbourne Victory and avoid the wooden spoon.

Since the end of the season in January, van Egmond has focused all her attention on the Matildas and impressing new coach Hesterine de Reus.

‘‘We are in camp with the Matildas every second weekend,’’ she said. ‘‘When a new coach comes in everyone is in the same boat.’’ 

Van Egmond turned down an offer in Sweden and has been training with the Jets youth team, but she has not ruled out a stint overseas later in the year.

‘‘At the moment training with the youth team boys has been good, and with the Matildas being so frequent, training has been  intense.’’
