Bernard Kevin McGrath, 65, faces allegations that he repeatedly raped, molested and abused dozens of young boys at church-run institutions including in the Hunter Region during the 1970s and '80s.
Christchurch District Court Judge Jane Farish had earlier ruled that McGrath, 65, be returned to Australia.
However, he appealed the decision and the case will be heard before Justice Christian Whata in the High Court at Christchurch today.
McGrath is on bail, under strict conditions.
