The money was presented recently under the federal government's Local Sporting Champions grants program at a ceremony hosted by Charlton MP Greg Combet.
Mr Combet said each athlete had achieved sporting success at an elite level and the grants would help to meet costs involved with their sport.
The eight athletes are: Angelina Yokoyama (Bonnells Bay), judo; Liam Yokoyama (Bonnells Bay), judo; Maddeleyne Milligan (Morisset), futsal; Jordan Makin (Wyee Point), sailing; Jacob Sansom (Boolaroo), swimming; Jennaye Dodd (Lakelands), tenpin bowling; Amy Tooney (Woodrising), tenpin bowling; and Reece Rowbottom (Maryland), BMX riding.
This year the awards program has given $19,500 to 21 sports stars and three teams in the Charlton electorate, Mr Combet said.
The grants, available for locals aged from 12 to 18 years, cover travel costs, accommodation, uniforms and equipment and are also available for young coaches, umpires and referees.
