The Newcastle Agri-Terminal infrastructure arrived in the port on Sunday and was discharged into a berth yesterday.
Newcastle Agri-Terminal executive director Jock Carter said it would introduce new environmental standards in dust suppression for grain ship loading to the port.
‘‘The terminal has 60,000 metric tonnes of storage and will provide the grain industry with more efficient rail discharge and the ability to load larger vessels,’’ Mr Carter said.
‘‘The $30million terminal has been under construction for 16 months and has generally employed between 80 and 120 construction workers on site.’’
Mr Carter said GrainCorp controlled the majority of grain port infrastructure on the east coast, including terminals in Newcastle and Port Kembla.
The terminal would be commissioned in December this year, in time for the 2014 export year and it was expected to operate three trains a week to the port berth on a continual loop, Mr Carter said.
