Promoter
The promoter is Newcastle Newspapers Pty Limited ABN 46 000 003 967 of 28 Bolton Street, Newcastle, NSW, 2300, (02) 4979 5000.
Competition Period
The competition entries will be published in the Newcastle Herald every Tuesday and Thursday as per the publication roster provided to schools by the competition co-ordinator. The first entries will publish on April 21, 2015, with the final entries published on October 29, 2015.
Entry restrictions
Entries are restricted to children attending school from the ages of 10-19 years of age.
All components of the entry must be completed by the students. If a teacher or parent completes a section of the entry, it must be acknowledged by the school. Only student material will be considered in the judging of the entry.
Entry method
School teams are required to complete a two-page newspaper which includes the following:
School’s masthead
Story 1 – 250-word story accompanied by square photograph.
Story 2 – 350-word lead story accompanied by horizontal photograph.
Story 3 – 200-word story accompanied by horizontal photograph
Story 4 – 400-word editorial, accompanied by editorial cartoon
Story 5 – 250-300 word page lead story, accompanied by vertical photograph.
Story 6 – 150-200 word story, accompanied by horizontal photograph.
Student-designed Newcastle Permanent Advertisement (submit up to 3 for selection – theme supplied by the competition co-ordinator)
A layout, editorial cartoon and advertising template, provided by the Promoter, is to be adhered to.
The Promoter is not responsible for late, lost or misdirected entries, or interrupted communications, unavailable network servers or other connections, failed telephone, mid-delivery or computer transmissions or other errors of any kind, whether human, mechanical or electronic.
Except for any liability that cannot be excluded by law, the Promoter excludes all liability (including negligence), for any personal injury; or any loss or damage (including loss of opportunity); whether direct, indirect, special or consequential, arising in any way in connection with the competition.
The Promoter may amend these terms and conditions from time to time at its discretion.
Maximum number of entries
One entry is allowed per school per year, unless the school has inclusive primary and secondary schools, in which they are permitted one entry per sub-school, per year.
Prize details
Prizes will be provided by the Newcastle Permanent Building Society.
Best School Newspaper: Schools which produce the best overall entry in the primary and secondary categories will receive either a $2000 account from the Newcastle Permanent or equipment to the value of $2000.
Young Journalist’s Award: One primary and one secondary student will be given a Young Journalist’s award which attracts a $500 account from the Newcastle Permanent. Each school can submit the names of two students for consideration. At the end of the competition, only nominated students will be considered for the award. In addition to the monetary prize, the secondary Young Journalist will win a week’s work experience at the Newcastle Herald.
Best Photography: One primary and one secondary student will be awarded a Young Photographer of the Year award. These awards carry a prize of photographic equipment, courtesy of the Newcastle Permanent Building Society.
Individual Achievers: In addition to the Young Writer and Best Photographer awards, students who excel in editorial writing, news writing, illustration and advertising design will receive $150 accounts with the Newcastle Permanent Building Society.
Participation: All students who take part in will receive a certificate.
Best Video: One primary school and one secondary school will will a $500 voucher, courtesy of the Newcastle Permanent Building Society.
Notification of winners
Winners will be notified:
- at the end of year award ceremony
- via phone if they cannot attend
Winners will also be announced in the Newcastle Herald and at theherald.com.au.
Prize delivery
Winners will be given their prizes at the end of year ceremony. If they are unable to attend the ceremony, their prize will be mailed to them. In the case of photographic equipment not awarded on the day, winners will be able to collect it from the Newcastle Herald office in Bolton Street, Newcastle.
Publicity
The winner agrees to participate in and co-operate as required with all reasonable media editorial requests relating to the prize, including but not limited to, being interviewed and photographed.
Judging
Judging in all categories will be conducted after the publication of the final school newspaper entry. The judges are from the Department of Education and Training; the Catholic Schools Office; the Herald; and the Newcastle Permanent Building Society.
Entry benefits
Schools will receive twice-weekly papers throughout the competition, plus up to 550 copies on the day the school’s entry is published.
Schools are also entitled to attend a tour of the Fairfax Regional Printing Press at Beresfield. Teaching co-ordinators need to organise this with the competition co-ordinator.
