The NSW Electoral Commission conducted the formal ballot of candidates at Newcastle City Hall at 2pm on Wednesday as the race to fill the void left by former lord mayor Jeff McCloy officially gets under way.
Mr Buman tops the ticket ahead of independent David Chapman, independent Rod Holding, independent Brad Luke, Labor’s Nuatali Nelmes, Australia First Party’s Joe Ferguson and the Greens’ Therese Doyle.
As revealed earlier today, current deputy mayor Brad Luke will resign from his post as president of the Liberal party’s Newcastle branch to contest the November 15 poll.
Mr Luke, Ms Doyle and Ms Nelmes are all members of the current council. If any of them win the lord mayoral byelection, yet another byelection will have to be held to fill the position vacated by them on the council.
