Compiled fro travellers' ratings and reviews, the TripAdvisor list puts the region ahead of stalwarts Airlie Beach and Byron Bay.
Territory capitals Canberra and Darwin are also below the Coalfields' wine country on the list.
Hunter Valley Visitor Centre Coordinator Melissa George said she was unsurprised to see Cessnock listed after the area's information centre received 900 visitors a day over the Christmas and New Year period.
“It’s great to see Cessnock being recognised for its place as one of the oldest and most diverse wine regions in the world,” Melissa said.
“TripAdvisor is arguably the world's largest travel site, so to have exposure of this kind to such a wide audience is great for attracting tourists to the area."
The listing follows a major year for the district after it hosted Japan's national football team before the Asian Cup and superstars Bruce Springsteen and the Rolling Stones performed in Pokolbin.
Sydney earned top spot, pipping Melbourne and Brisbane, while Port Douglas and Hobart also ranked above Cessnock.
