ANTHONY Ekert enjoyed a decorated rugby union career while studying at the university.
In 1989 and 1992 he won the University of Newcastle Sportsperson of the Year, as well as being a finalist for the award in 1991.
He attended the University of Newcastle from 1987 to 1992, before joining Sydney club Gordon to further his representative chances.
During his time at the university he was a stalwart at the rugby club, and played understudy to legendary Australian captain Nick Farr-Jones at representative level.
Mr Ekert’s representative path while at university included representing Newcastle, NSW Country, NSW and Australia.
In 1991 he was selected to tour Argentina with the NSW team.
Highlights of his career include playing against the Scotland national team three times in 10 days in 1992 by representing the Northern Territory, the Emerging Wallabies and NSW Country respectively.
Another highlight was scoring a first-half try for Sydney in a magnifi cent 40-17 win over the mighty New Zealand All Blacks in 1992.
