HEPTATHLON THE 2013 University of Newcastle Sportsperson of the Year, Sophie Stanwell, has already hit some major highs in her career as a heptathlete.
Ms Stanwell, who studied a bachelor of nutrition and dietetics, competed at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, finishing fourth and narrowly missing out on a medal finish in the women’s multi-event despite recording a personal best score.
The Commonwealth Games participation is a highlight of Ms Stanwell’s career so far, which has included advanced representation of the university.
In 2012, she claimed the Australian University Games Heptathlon Championship and the year after she gained selection in the Australian Uniroos team for the 2013
World University Games in Kazan, Russia, where she placed ninth.
Ms Stanwell’s personal best performance at the Commonwealth Games included breaking her own records in the shot put, javelin and 800m events.
On the way to fourth place she won the 100m hurdles in the second heat with a time of 14.18 seconds.
Women’s heptathlon consists of seven events: 100m hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200m, long jump, javelin throw and 800m.
A 2013 Friends of the University Sports Scholarship recipient, Ms Stanwell will look to build on her sporting achievements after finishing her degree.
