Steven Middleton was one of four barristers appointed as judges of the court on Thursday, and he will begin in the Newcastle registry on November 9.
Mr Middleton has been a barrister in private practice in Queensland since 2007, primarily in the areas of family law, child protection crime, domestic violence and alternative dispute resolution. Previously, he was a managing partner with Griffiths Parry Lawyers, and a lecturer and tutor at the University of Sunshine Coast.
He graduated with a Diploma of Laws from the Legal Practitioners Admission Board in NSW in 1995 and a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the College of Law in 1996.
He was admitted to practice as a solicitor in the NSW Supreme Court and High Court of Australia in 1996.
Judge Coakes retired in June after 11 years in the role, warning of a lack of judges.
