But there isn’t much else known about the murder victim whose naked body was found with stab wounds to her neck in the well-known blowhole adjacent to the notorious Snapper Point fishing spot on Sunday morning.
Homicide detectives believe there was a degree of “stealth’’ in taking her into the Lake Munmorah State Conservation Area and thrown into the sea, quite probably not far from where she was found floating face down.
There is a theory she may have been dumped elsewhere and floated into the blowhole, but investigators suspect her body was discarded nearby.
The park is locked between 6pm and 5.30am, and detectives are hopeful that either someone is missing a relative or friend, or a park visitor saw something that wasn’t quite right.
Detectives have not discounted the killer may have spent a night inside the park and believe they may have intimate knowledge of Snapper Point, where a windy, dirt track ends at the headland and adjacent to a cliff down to the blow hole.
“Obviously her identity is a priority,’’ homicide squad Detective Inspector Gary Jubelin said.
“Once we find that out it can take us anywhere.’’
The results from an autopsy due to be performed by forensic pathologists on Tuesday will also be keenly received by detectives, who are hoping to narrow down a possible time of death.
Detective Inspector Jubelin said it was within 48 hours of the discovery at 10.30am on Sunday, and possibly much closer.
“It’s a popular spot, a lot of people go there, and with it being a long weekend I just can’t see how she could have been there and no one saw her for any great length of time,’’ he said.
The rock shelf is very popular with fisherman, with 16 deaths recorded along a three kilometre stretch around Snapper Point and Frazer Park in the past eight years.
Many of those deaths are people of Asian descent, who travel from Sydney to wet a line.
The woman is of Asian appearance, aged between 20 and 35 and about 170cm tall.
She was naked and there are no tattoos or birth marks on her body.
“We would be very interested in speaking with anyone who has any concerns about someone who matches that description,’’ Detective Inspector Jubelin said.
