THE all-time favourite childhood game, Pokemon, is back and with a vengeance in the form of an app, which has taken over the streets of Newcastle with Pokefans in a battle to “catch ‘em all”.
Pokemon GO launched in Australia on Wednesday, July 6 and has brought together young and old Novocastrians onto the streets of Newcastle to find their favourite pocket monsters. Through the app’s use of GPS and internet services, the whole world is transformed into a Pokemon region map with cute creatures popping up everywhere.
Pokefan Matilda Kirkwood has been eagerly waiting for the app and since its launch and has been finding creatures and claiming territory all around Newcastle. The 14-year-old said the app had become so popular because unlike most games, the app took you outside.
“It’s literally got every single nerd outside," Matilda said.
“You walk around and see people on their phones, which is normal, but then they stop and start swiping. It’s brought everyone together to catch virtual monsters.”
