Not to be confused with the South Australian-based political party, the Nick Xenophon Team, NXT is the WWE’s development league and it has established its own identity and a rabid global fan base since launching in 2012. To many wrestling fans its seen as a more exciting product than the PG-orientated WWE.
It has produced an array of the WWE’s biggest names in Seth Rollins, Kevin Owens, Finn Balor and Sami Zayn and is currently headlined by NXT champion Shinsuke Nakamura, the so-called “King of Strong Style.” Nakamura and other leading NXT wrestlers Samoa Joe, Bobby Roode and Bayley are expected to perform at the Newcastle Entertainment Centre show on December 10.
It will be the first time WWE has visited Newcastle since June 2008, however, the American wrestling behemoth has regularly toured Australia. The NXT tour also includes dates in Melbourne, Gold Coast, Sydney, Canberra and Perth.
“We couldn't be more excited to continue the explosive international growth of NXT, and bring the hard-hitting excitement of our live shows and larger-than-life superstars to Australia and New Zealand for the first time,” WWE executive vice president Paul Levesque (aka Triple H) said.
Tickets go on sale 10am on September 5.
