Well, we’re having our own light festival at Mayfield. It’s called the Illuminate Block Party and it’s on this Friday night.
Topics does love a good light show. There’s something that draws us in, like a moth to a flame. It’s magical, alluring, hypnotic.
Is it some primal thing in our subconscious, linked to stars in the night sky? Or does it just remind us of Christmas lights? On a philosophical level, perhaps it’s because the light keeps us away from the dark.
Or, maybe we just like the beauty of radiating colours at night. Even the neon in city streets and on buildings captivates us.
Forgive us. We drifted off for a second there into the abyss. Perhaps that’s a wrong choice of words. We’re not too sure if the abyss would actually have light.
Anyway, event organiser Rita Dixon said the Mayfield light show would use similar technology to that used for Vivid.
This involves computer-generated images projected onto buildings.
“Ours is obviously a much smaller scale,” Ms Dixon said, of the event.
“The animation has been done by teenagers at Mayfield in collaboration with HoboTechno [an experimental arts collective].”
At a recent workshop, the youngsters “came up with some amazing artwork”.
“It was quite inspirational. We’re really excited to see that projected onto the buildings of Mayfield on Victoria Street.”
Ms Dixon said Mayfield had “a really strong street-art culture”.
“We’ve been working for a number of years on getting some fantastic painted murals in the area.
“I think this is another way the people of Mayfield can see their suburb being decorated.”
A light show on a wall, she said, was “a different kind of art that brings animation and movement into play”.
“It’s a way to express art in an impermanent way. It’s fun to watch as well.”
That it is.
The event will run in Victoria Street from 6pm to 10pm. Visit thisismayfield.com for more details.
Fall In Line
Don’t you just love it when everything is in sync and there’s symmetry in the world. When you have all your ducks in a row and when the planets align. When everything is in unison.
This is what we thought when we saw these workers in a vertical line.
We were strolling along a path at Honeysuckle towards the Newcastle Herald’s office, when it caught our eye.
Parked In
Parking into tight spots takes skill and focus. One must be alert and aware of one’s surroundings.
People disdain a poor parker, but they respect a good parker. Which is why a reader sent us this picture of a truck expertly parked next to the FogHorn Brewhouse in King Street, Newcastle.
“One classy bit of parking,” the reader said.
Meow Meow
Ever wondered what your cat is saying? If so, we have the purrfect solution – a new device called The Lucky Translator.
Lucky Lotteries spokeswoman Elissa Lewis said the device was “the latest feline science technology”. Hmmm. Not sure we believe that. We tend to think Lucky Lotteries might just be using a tricky marketing tactic to get us to buy lottery tickets.
Anyhow, they’re giving 100 devices away. To win, upload a photo of your feline friend on LuckyTranslator.com.au and write what you think moggy is thinking and feeling.
