The Hunter Multicultural Community Drug Action Team (CDAT) hopes to “empower” local refugees to prevent alcohol and drug related problems by highlighting the “hidden epidemic” of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD).
The group launched its prevention campaign at Wallsend Health Campus on Thursday. Chairperson Tony Brown said there was no safe limit when it came to alcohol consumption in pregnancy.
“It’s the most common non-genetic cause of birth defects and a range of permanent physical, intellectual and developmental disabilities that are primarily preventable,” he said.
The awareness campaign is part of a broader parenting engagement strategy.
