Jenny Enderby was among the country’s most talented orienteering competitors as a teenager.
She won multiple national junior titles and competed in World Cup events before turning her focus to triathlon and duathlon in her 20s.
It was not until having kids that she returned to orienteering.
“Once I had kids it was hard to train for triathlon,” Enderby said.
“Every year there is a five-day race orienteering race and it was in Newcastle, so I did it and thought, ‘I’m really enjoying it this again’.
“It got me hooked on it again, and now, having kids, it’s a good family sport.”
The Valentine 48-year-old has just returned from the World Masters Orienteering Championships in New Zealand with two bronze medals.
She was third in the women’s 45-years sprint distance and long distance events.
It followed on from medal-winning efforts at the Oceania titles, held two weeks earlier, when Enderby won the sprint and was second in the middle and long distance finals as well as the relay.
Both of her daughters also had success at the Oceania titles.
Erika, 10, was third in the 12-years sprint distance event then was part of the winning mixed relay team with fellow Newcastle competitor Rebecca Craig.
Mikayla, 12, was second in the mixed 14 relay along with Newcastle’s Alvin Craig.
