The wild weather is expected to last through to the weekend.
Weather experts say an east coast low is forming over the Tasman Sea, causing severe weather conditions.
Anthony Cornelius of Weatherwatch said it would be fine but cool for most of today with isolated showers this afternoon.
He said a slow-moving low-pressure system would move into the region overnight and tomorrow bringing strong south-westerly wind and showers.
The extreme swell from last week will return with a predicted three to four metres tomorrow, increasing to more than five metres on Thursday and Friday.
The swell will peak on Friday and Saturday, at this stage anticipated to be six metres offshore.
Dangerous surf conditions are likely along the beaches.
