The Centennial Coal mine is in Climate Change Minister Greg Combet’s electorate.
Centennial Coal chief executive officer David Moult said his company was ‘‘not happy about the tax’’.
With Mr Combet at her side, Ms Gillard promised the miners their jobs would not be threatened.
‘‘They’ll be here mining coal as long as this mine lasts,’’ Ms Gillard said.
Ms Gillard showed no signs of backing down from the tax, despite a public backlash.
‘‘This is the right decision for the nation’s future,’’ she said.
