A Premier Youthworks spokesperson said Mr McGovern was stepping down for “personal reasons”.
According to his LinkedIn profile, Mr McGovern started work with Premier Youthworks in 2005 and became CEO in 2012.
The Herald reported last month that the Cardiff-based company was being audited by the Department of Family and Community Services (FACS). The review follows a Four Corners investigation that aired a number of allegations about the handling of its finances by Mr McGovern and managing director Lisa Glen. It’s understood Ms Glen remains at the helm of the organisation.
A FACS spokesperson would not comment on Mr McGovern’s resignation. The department is currently conducting a tender process for new residential and foster care contracts, due to begin in October.
Wallsend MP Sonia Hornery welcomed the review of Premier Youthworks, but questioned if there were broader problems within the sector that needed to be addressed.
