The surprised third-year medicine student initially struggled to believe the gesture was real but was then delighted to received almost $50 in free petrol.

She was approached by Shannon Riley, the Newcastle co-ordinator for Random Act of Kindness Day, which is a national campaign held today.

As part of this year’s campaign Travelodge in Newcastle has handed out more than $2000 worth of meal vouchers, and individuals, business and schools are expected to make more gestures today.

Now in its third year, the day aims to unite people through goodwill, whether paying for a stranger’s coffee or offering to mow a neighbour’s lawn.

‘‘The day encourages us to show each other that we care and reminds us that we may be only one person in this world, but random acts of kindness can mean the world to others,’’ Mr Riley said.

‘‘These acts can completely change your mood and the course of your day.’’
