But a crowdfunding campaign has helped turn the iconic site into Lynch’s Hub, a cafe and soon-to-be cycle hire and community bike workshop.
Lynch’s Hub – at 292 Wharf Road – had its official launch on Sunday, with a constant stream of people dropping in for a coffee or to check out the revitalised building.
“People don't realise how important this site is,” manager Blake Forrester said.
“It’s the point that ties together the key precincts in our city.”
The amusement bike hire will be free for the first six months after a sponsorship deal with Newcastle commercial radio station hit 106.9, Mr Forrester said.
