The fire has been burning at Richmond Vale, between Mulbring and Kurri Kurri, since Tuesday.
Firefighters had back-burned overnight but strong winds and hot weather has forced the RFS to upgrade the severity of the blaze.
The fire is burning on the western side of Legetts Drive and has broken containment lines, the RFS said.
The blaze is currently burning in an easterly direction.
Firefighters and water-bombing aircraft are working to protect properties in the area.
The RFS’s “watch and act” alert level advises residents to monitor conditions, which are changing quickly.
According to the RFS, the fire has spread to 381 hectares.
It is believed to ignited from a car fire on Tuesday.
A total fire ban is in place for the Hunter for Wednesday.
