Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said the partnership was the first in the council’s new Community Impact Program. Got Your Back Sista will be promoted at the Newcastle 500 Supercars event on White Ribbon Day, where founder Melissa Histon will address 250 attendees at a luncheon at Fort Scratchley.
“We're dedicated to helping vulnerable women thrive and live independently and we are thrilled that the council shares our vision,” she said. “We want to keep that message going that domestic violence is never acceptable and we stand behind people experiencing it to reach out and ask for help.” From mid next-year council staff will be able to undertake, during work hours, two days’ volunteer work. Council Interim CEO Jeremy Bath said he hoped other employers would follow council’s lead.
