Construction of the new, improved Pelican boat ramp is a step closer, with the appointment of a contractor to finalise the design and build the facility.
Lake Macquarie City Council has awarded the tender to Hunter Wharf and Barge. The new facility, which will replace the damaged ramp on the same site, has been designed to guard against erosion and to improve accessibility.
Demolition of the existing ramp will begin in February, with the new ramp expected to be open to the public by mid-2018.
The new ramp will be an alcove design with protective rock structures on either side to fortify it against fast-flowing water. It will also feature a pontoon to make embarking and disembarking from craft easier.
“Council staff have worked hard to develop a solution that not only meets the community’s needs but also suits the water conditions in that part of the lake,” Lake Macquarie mayor Cr Kay Fraser said.
“Upgrading the ramp in the existing location also means that associated facilities such as trailer parking, the amenities block and fish cleaning tables are already available nearby.”
