Musos Corner is celebrating 50 years in Newcastle. From its humble beginnings as the little guitar shop on the corner of Hunter and National Park streets, the store has grown into one of Australia’s largest music retailers.

Most Newcastle musos (and especially guitarists) bought their first guitar from Musos Corner and the shop has now empowered entire generations of Newcastle musicians to play and write music; from the Screaming Jets and Silverchair to countless local acts.
This incredible sense of empowerment and joy that learning to play and write music gives people is at the heart of the reason why Musos Corner is opening Australia’s first RockSchool Music Education Centre.
RockSchool is the future of music lessons – a highly regarded global specialist awarding body (UK) for musicians and performers who are keen to hone their skills.
By working in conjunction with major record labels, music publishers and the best session musicians in the UK, they have created a complete graded music syllabus that allows students to learn (from Grade 0 -8) while playing the latest songs from acts such as Adele, Taylor Swift, The Foo Fighters, Metallica and Dianna Krall.
The syllabus is recognised in Australia by AMEB (Australian Music Education Board) and for the first time offers you the chance to enjoy learning music without ever having to play classical or antiquated music pieces.
Jesse Schadel, Head of RockSchool Music at Musos Corner, is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Music and an in demand piano player.
“I’m so excited that we – as teachers – can now teach formal music concepts from a really modern syllabus,” Jesse said. “When students see that they can play the songs of their rock or pop idols, it just makes learning more enjoyable for them and the understanding of music more accessible.”
The RockSchool Music Education Centre is also housed in Musos Corner’s incredible 90Degree Studio facility; a full commercial recording studio; an important point given that nearly every musician in the world now uses some form of digital technology to compose and record music.
This is why the RockSchool Music Education Centre will also be offering the world’s first Graded Music Production lessons.
Director of the 90Degree Studio, Allon Silove, has been involved in the music industry for over 20 years as a musician, producer, sound-engineer and teacher.
“The RockSchool Music Production syllabus is just about the most exciting thing I’ve seen in music education since we started using computers,” Allon said.
“Everyone is composing and recording with software but the understanding of how to actually engineer good sounds and produce great music is not easy to find on your own. YouTube clips are great but they can’t replace spending time in a real studio with a real producer.”
Musos Corner’s RockSchool Music Education Centre is now open and taking enrolments for 2018.
