There are some impressive homes overlooking Merewether beach but it would be hard to find any that rival the design and uniqueness of 76 Frederick Street.
The home has its formal entry on Frederick Street and appears quite modest from the street.
But it extends through to the Merewether beach car park and the view from the water side is captivating.
The residence was built 12 years ago and designed by EJE Architecture with a nautical theme.
From Watkins Street you feel like you are looking at a boat with its unique floating verandahs, sharp edges and stainless steel handrails.
Jason Maxwell, of Raine & Horne Newcastle and Stockton, is marketing the property for the third time and described it as one of the finest in the beachside suburb.
“From a construction perspective, the engineering involved in holding that structure up is enormous,” he said.
“Design-wise, the whole building was designed with a nautical theme. That big glass section that comes off the kitchen is like the bow of a boat.
“It’s not a hugely wide block but there is still 515 square metres of interior living. It’s pretty special.”
Owners Lea and Tony had admired the property and its architecture before securing it two-and-a-half years ago.
We don’t even have a telly on through the day. You just find yourself sitting, watching. There’s always a whale or dolphins or something going on out there. You’re constantly just sitting there looking at the water or listening to it.”
They renovated before moving in and the result was a warm, family home.
“We worked hard not to make it feel sterile. I wanted it to feel like a real warm, inviting house” Lea said.
“We made this house so it wouldn’t matter what time of year it was you’d feel like you were on a holiday, you feel like you’re away somewhere.”
The couple have travelled widely but Lea said she was yet to find anywhere that offered sunrises and sunsets like those enjoyed from every level of the five-bedroom home, including a much-loved rooftop terrace.
“We don’t even have a telly on through the day. You just find yourself sitting, watching,” Lea said.
“There’s always a whale or dolphins or something going on out there. You’re constantly just sitting there looking at the water or listening to it.”
On the ground floor are four bedrooms, two bathrooms, a wet room plus a bar area and separate lounge.
The second level features a sleek white polyurethane kitchen with granite benches, a living space and separate media room.
The third level is devoted to the master suite, complete with separate walk-in robes and ensuite.
“It’s just a beautifully designed home,” Lea said.
“We’ve done some amazing houses but this has been the most people have wanted to come and stay because it’s an entertaining house. But it’s still a family home at the same time.”
It is being marketed through expressions of interest with a price range guide of $4.75 million to $5.25 million. Inspections are by appointment only.
