RESIDENTS have detained a man they suspected was stealing from vehicles in the early hours of the morning in Merewether, police say.
About 2.30am on Thursday residents in Rowan Crescent called police after detaining a 24-year-old on suspicion of stealing from vehicles.
Police officers arrested the man and searched a vehicle which allegedly contained a large number of items believed to be stolen.
The man, who was on bail for other offences, was taken to Newcastle police station where he was charged with larceny and breach of bail.
He was bail refused to appear at Newcastle Local Court today.
Officers are appealing to anyone who had their vehicle broken into recently to contact Newcastle police station.
