WALLSEND MP Sonia Hornery will step into the Speaker’s chair in the state Parliament this week.
The long-standing Hunter Labor MP took the role last week, giving her the duties when both the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly Shelley Hancock and deputy Thomas George are unavailable.
She previously filled the role from May 2011 until February 2014.
“I look forward to taking on the new role and stepping up to the Speaker’s chair when Parliament sits this week,” she said.
“I thank my colleagues and the Speaker for having confidence in me to fulfil this role and I look forward to the challenges it brings.”
The Speaker is the presiding officer of the assembly and must act with authority and impartiality. The main duty of the role is to maintain order, put questions after debate and conduct divisions as necessary.
