Fifty people from as far away as Victoria have registered so far to take part in Mulletfest at the Chelmsford Hotel on February 24, to decide who has the finest locks.

Whether your style icon is Billy-Ray Cyrus, MacGyver – or even if you’re more of a Joe Dirt type – Topics reckons there’s a category for everyone.
The best everyday mullet, grubby mullet, ranga mullet (for redheads only), lady’s mullet, junior mullet and overall mullet champion will be lauded for their crowning glory.
Pub band The Stunned Mullets have even been booked to play.
Laura Johnson, whose family – the Hawkins family – owns the hotel said many in Kurri Kurri believed the town was the epicentre of mullet pride.
Laura, a hairdresser by trade, married into a proud family of men sporting “legend mullets”.
Her father in law Kevin has a traditional mullet while her husband JJ has the more extreme skullet – shaved at the front and long at the back. Laura said it was a glorious sight.
“I had to grow to love it,” she told Topics after revealing that JJ had been wearing the hairstyle since she met him.
Laura said the lady’s and redhead categories still needed more entrants.
With her hairdresser’s hat on, Laura said there were a couple of simple tips to keeping a mullet in shape.
“I would suggest four-weekly front maintenance and then leave the back as long as you like,” she said.
“The everyday mullet is more washed and conditioned, but the grubby mullet, that’s open to interpretation.
“We’ve got some dreadlocks coming, plaits, things like that.
“Every mullet is different. There is no standard mullet.”

Gear off for charity run
Don’t get your knickers in a knot if you happen to see hundreds of people running along the coast in their underwear this weekend – it’s all for charity.
Cupid’s Undie Run will start at midday from the grassed area outside Nobby’s surf lifesaving club, with people encouraged to run, dance or walk the 2km circuit.
Registrations start at 11.30am and the first 2000 to sign up nationally get a new pair of undies and a t-shirt.
There’ll be plenty of entertainment and fun on the day and the money raised will go to the Children’s Tumour Foundation Australia.
When else would you have such a good excuse to go for a run in your budgies?
