
For the third consecutive year, Surfest’s women’s event has proven a crowd favourite.
A crowd-funding campaign has again kept the contest at a 6000-point qualifying series level, which has in turn attracted many of the world’s best surfers.
Eight-five businesses took $1650 shares in a draw to be naming-rights sponsor and win other prizes. Seven-time world champion Layne Beachley drew out Grandstand Sports Clinic for the main honour.
Business banking executive manager for CommBank, Col Law, came up with the crowd-funding idea three years ago.
“I am very proud to be part of a community that believes that our region is a place that deserves to host world-class events,” Col said.
“The crowd-funding support of the community for this iconic event has ensured the sport’s best see Newcastle as a world-class place to compete.”
