Judges took a closer look at the glorious cut at Chelmsford Hotel Kurri Kurri at the weekend in a bid to find out who had the best mullet around and would take home the crown for their crowning glory at the inaugural Mullet Fest.
And, after much consideration, the title of best everyday mullet went to Denman local Shane "Shag" Hanrahan. Mr Hanrahan, whose hair has not been cut since 1986, was excited by the win, celebrating by taking a sip from his brand new trophy and fronting the house band for a sensational rendition of AC/DC's Dirty Deeds.
Other winners on the day included: The grubby mullet: Trent Wright (from Booral, NSW); Junior mullet: Alex Keary (from Monavale, NSW); Ladies’ mullet: eleven-month-old Sylvie Thornton (From Kurri Kurri) and lastlty, the ranger mullet title was awarded to Cougar Knight (from Rosebud, VIC).
Paterson MP and Mullet Fest 2017 judge Meryl Swanson said people had embraced Saturday’s event and its atmosphere was “absolutely fantastic”.
“It’s a bit like the mullet itself, you know, business at the front and party at the back,” she said.
“In fact it’s interesting because there’s actually a lot of care and pride that goes into these hairstyles.
“And, that’s a bit like Kurri – we care about the town and we’re very proud of it.
“It’s great to really encourage some good, clean fun, but also support local business and bring more people to our town.
“I think it will be longer and stronger next year, like a true mullet.”
Jess Hill, mother of three-year-old mullet-wearing Gabriel, travelled from Wollongong to join hundreds of other mullet enthusiasts.
“I believe that our Aussie culture needs to be preserved in our kids,” she said.
“I’m very proud to be Australian and I’m proud of what our country is.
“I’m proud of our multiculturalism, but I’m [also] proud of our traditional Aussie culture and I want that for our children.”
