Newcastle football legend Col Curran will be recognised when the second edition of the The Heritage Cup is held this weekend.
Northern NSW Football started the Heritage Cup, the brainchild of Andy Harper, last year and Adamstown upset Edgeworth in the final. The tournament celebrates the Hunter’s football heritage and features clubs with 100 years or more of unbroken history.
This year, a tournament medal named in honour of Socceroos and Adamstown legend Curran will be created. A naming-rights sponsor, to be revealed on Thursday, will allow all teams to play for free.
West Wallsend are playing trial games elsewhere and not participating in the Heritage Cup this year. However, interdistrict club Dudley Redhead and second-tier league side New Lambton are new to the tournament.
They join National Premier League clubs Lake Macquarie, Edgeworth, Adamstown and Weston and second-tier competition teams Wallsend and Cessnock City.
Also returning are interdistrict team Maryland Fletcher, who are the ninth side and represent the area’s first club, Minmi Rangers.
The round-robin competition starts Friday night and finishes with finals on Sunday afternoon.
