A driver is lucky to be alive after his vehicle left the road and hit several trees along the M1 Motorway.
Lake Macquarie Highway Patrol released images of the crash as a warning to drivers about the danger of falling asleep at the wheel.
About 5.15pm on Monday police were patrolling north along the M1 at Black Hill and noticed a Jeep travelling in front of them.
Without warning the Jeep veered left off the road, smashed into several trees and rolled.
Amazingly the driver was not seriously injured in the crash and managed to return safely home.
He told police he had travelled from Sydney and may have fallen asleep at the wheel. He woke as his car left the roadway, but it was too late to avoid the accident.
Police urge all drivers to Rest Revive Survive as they travel home after the Easter long weekend.
