SUCH a heartwarming story to start the day (‘Lucy made Doris’ day’, Newcastle Herald, 12/5). Lucy and her friends are regular visitors to many nursing homes in our region, bringing so much joy to elderly and disabled people who otherwise would never be able to interact with such gentle animals. It’s not only ponies, but a goat, an alpaca, several bunnies, guinea pigs and chickens that visit the homes and are welcomed by the residents and staff. I cried when I saw the story, knowing that my daughter Stephanie and her pets could make so many people so happy. So proud of Penny’s Ponies.

EVERY budget time, especially with an election in the wind, the circus comes to town singing that old familiar song “Everything you can do, l can do better, no you can't, yes l can, no you can't”, etc, etc, etc. Just once l would like a different tune without reference to one another. Most people including myself know, or have known, a person who had, or was going to do, almost everything. In my instance he was called “gunna”. Who will earn the title of “gunna” politician of the year?

“GIVE credit where credit is due”. Well, I give a lot of credit to Frank Ward OAM for his letter (Letters, 12/5). Frank, you summed up perfectly our federal government’s attitude to pensioners in this country. To them, we are just a drag on the budget. Their reason for increasing the pension age to 70 is their hope most will die before they are entitled to a pension. Self-funded retirees are their favourite people. Elderly Australians’ entitlement to a pension and affordable healthcare should be a higher priority than entitlements of politicians, they should be the first casualty of any budget cuts.
