A man has suffered serious injuries to his hand and forearm after the kayak he was paddling was hit by the propeller of a boat near Port Stephens.

About 7am on Sunday, emergency services were called to the boat ramp at Shoal Bay after reports a kayaker had been injured after he was hit by the boat.
The collision occurred in the water east of Port Stephens.
The 46-year-old kayaker was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics at the scene for severe injuries to his right hand and forearm.
He was taken to John Hunter Hospital by Westpac Helicopter in a serious condition.
The 26-year-old male driver of the boat was taken to Nelson Bay Community Hospital for mandatory testing.
Officers from Port Stephens-Hunter Police District and the Marine Area Command established a crime scene and launched an investigation.
The boat has been towed and will be examined by specialist police.
Inquiries were continuing.
