A whole new way of seniors living will soon be available in the Newcastle area.
Cameron Glen is a new supported living village currently being built in Cameron Park, Newcastle.
Supported Living is a fairly new concept in seniors’ living in Australia, combining all the best points of retirement village living with the best points of a traditional Aged Care facility.
Residents live in their own fully self-contained villa unit. This can be either one, two or three bedrooms, with either one or two bathrooms. The units come fully equipped with all appliances. Each unit has its own sunny, private rear courtyard.
“The villa units at Cameron Glen are being built to very high standards,” Cameron Glen director Paul Greenup said. “All units come fully equipped with all appliances including air-conditioning, designer kitchens with granite benchtops, fully compliant seniors bathrooms and high-quality finishes throughout.
“All residents are encouraged to be as independent as they can be. That said, our nursing staff are on site and on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. A lot of our residents don’t need any care at all, some just need a bit of a hand to get started in the morning, like help with showering and getting dressed and medication supervision. Some require high care. The care staff come to our residents’ home as required.”

- Cameron Glen Retirement Village
Meals will be available for lunch and dinner, seven days a week in Cameron Glen’s own Community Centre dining room to those residents who want them.
“Most of the residents at our other villages come up every day for lunch,” Paul said. “Others just occasionally. The choice is always theirs. The prices are extremely reasonable. A fully catered morning tea is served everyday free of charge for all residents.”
The Community Centre will also be used for resident activities. These will include exercise classes, bingo, craft sessions, movie nights and regular visiting entertainers.
“It is totally up to the residents how much they want to participate in the village activities,” Paul said. “We also have weekly shopping trips and regular outings in the village bus.”
Cameron Glen will be a fully accredited Approved Aged Care provider so it can facilitate access to government funded Home Care packages for residents.
Cameron Glen is very different to any other Seniors’ Living complex. It offers the freedom and the independence of a retirement village with all the support of a traditional aged care facility.
“We believe that Seniors want to live and to be as independent as they possibly can be and to feel as though they are independent,” Paul said. “This is what makes Cameron Glen unique.”
