A BLOCK of cottages at The Junction that date back to the first subdivision in the area could become part of Newcastle’s seventh heritage conservation area.
A plan to protect the Glebe Road cottages between Watkins and Union streets, as well as 4 Watkins Street, is on public exhibition. They were part of the first residential subdivision in the area by the Australian Agricultural Company. One boasts links to former Merewether mayor RJ Kilgour, whose son was the first to enlist locally for World War I in 1915.
Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said plan would enshrine their significance and character. “We want to retain that character to preserve our Novocastrian cultural identity and our sense of pride in our heritage places,” she said.
The area’s existing zoning allows for medium-density development.
