Merewether surfers cleaned up at the Newcastle and Mid North Coast Regional Surfing Titles, claiming five titles from the seven contested divisions.

Held at Merewether on Saturday and Dixon Park on Sunday, the junior surfers made the best of the conditions on offer with waves ranging from two to four feet.
At the top of the age groups, Madi Poole took out the under-18 girls and was chaired from the water after the win. Amelie Bourke won the under under-16 girls title and took home the Newcastle Coal Infrastructure Group High Performance Award.
Lachlan Smith won the under-12 boys, Zac Tinson the under-14s and Mike Clayton Brown the under-16s.
The other two divisions, under-14 girls and under-18 boys, were won by Imojen Enfield (Port Macquarie) and Ross Cadden (Forster) respectively.
Surfing Newcastle President Dan Frodsham praised the competition’s standard across the divisions.
“All of the finals were closely contested and the surfers laid it on the line, pushing each other to take the biggest waves and really going for it in the critical sections,” Frodsham said.
Joshua Stretton, of Anna Bay, picked up the boys NCIG High Performance Award.
The inaugural awards were two $500 training and competition scholarships aimed at nurturing the stars of tomorrow.
Knights’ Awards
Newcastle Knights held their junior presentation last week following the conclusion of the junior rep season.
The Tarsha Gayle Cup (Under-18 women) player of the year award went to Sophie Buller, whose side finished second after falling to Cronulla in the grand final in what was the first year of the nine-team competition.
Tom Cant was named Harold Matthews (Under-16) player of the year, with the same award for SG Ball (Under-18) going to Jaron Purcell. Both sides fell one win short of the grand final.
Purcell also received the Carlson Club award. Logan Radzievicb took home the Danny Buderus award.
Country Rugby
Both the Hunter Junior Rugby Union under-15 and 16 rep sides were crowned country champions at the weekend after winning the NSW Country Junior Rugby Union Championships at Bathurst.
A HJRU open boys side also took the crown earlier this month at Ourimbah, while the under 12s and 14s finished second at Armidale.
School Sevens
Valentine Public School finished sixth in the Primary School 7s rugby competition on Saturday, despite being undefeated.
The finals of the nine-zone comp were held at Allianz Stadium before the NSW Waratahs Super Rugby match.
A pair of draws and other results brought the sixth-place result.
