HUNTER libraries would receive a funding boost under a Labor government, the state opposition has announced.
Labor proposes to spend an extra $50 million on the state’s libraries if elected at the state poll next year, Shadow Minister for Local Government Peter Primrose announced in Newcastle on Thursday.
The cash would include a $25 million infrastructure fund for the 368 libraries and a doubling of the per capita funding subsidy from $1.85 to $3.70. Funding would also be linked to the consumer price index.
Newcastle MP Tim Crakanthorp said it was vital libraries were made a priority. “Many of us started our lifelong journey of education at the local library,” Mr Crakanthorp said.
“I know that my kids have all enjoyed a love of reading from their local library.”
