IN REPLY to Keith Parsons (Letters 9/6): cities all over the world including Sydney, Adelaide, Perth, Melbourne, Brisbane and London have polo in the park events without causing long-term damage. A few weeks after, you wouldn't even know they had ever been there. They don't churn it to mud!

IN REPLY to Topics (“Hunter’s Knitwits spin out the world”, Herald 12/6) I think you will find the June birthday holiday for the Queen was retained after King George V, whose birthday was in June. King George VI was born in December and Queen Elizabeth was born April. These last two birthdays are at Christmas and Easter and the celebrations were left in June. Not a big deal!

NEWCASTLE, being one of the fastest growing cities in Australia, should be looking to accommodate as many major sporting events as possible. With the airport growing rapidly and a long overdue development boom underway, the world is Newcastle’s oyster. The negative individuals will be long forgotten as rapidly as Newcastle is growing.

THE off-street parking fines issued by Newcastle City Council (“Council parking fines ruin day for footy fans”, Herald 11/6) at the footy are said to be safety issues. If safety is truly the motive, why not have a parking ranger present and stop cars from parking unsafe and directing them else where? I reckon the stadium management would happily pay the cost of wages not only last time, but every time. I think the truth is that it’s all about the money. The safety flag is wearing rather thin for mine.
