About 6.15pm Tuesday police and emergency services responded to reports of a crash involving a pedestrian at Fullerton Street.
Initial investigations suggest a man in his 50s was crossing Fullerton Street when he was hit by a Holden utility travelling south.
The pedestrian died at the scene and is yet to be formally identified.
The driver of the Holden, a 29-year-old man was breath tested with a negative result and taken to John Hunter Hospital for mandatory blood and urine testing.
Specialist officers from the Hunter Crash Investigation Unit attended the scene and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
