Having “a clear definition between the old and new” was important to Belinda and Paul Goldsworthy when they set about planning the extension and alteration of a two-bedroom home in The Junction.

The Goldsworthys are just the third owners of ‘Royston’, a double-brick cavity residence built circa 1930.
They bought the home at 14 Kemp Street in the heart of The Junction seven-and-a-half years ago and worked with Space Design Architecture and MADE construction company to create a residence that offered character, space and livability.
The result is a four-bedroom sanctuary with multiple indoor and outdoor living spaces, located walking distance to schools, The Junction shopping village and Bar Beach.
From the road, the residence retains its original charm and the front section of the home features leadlight windows, picture rails, timber floors, a fireplace and high, ornate ceilings.
There are two large bedrooms with built-ins downstairs and a new bathroom.
Open plan kitchen and living flows to the new section of the residence – a two-storey addition comprising separate family and rumpus rooms, internal garden, a drying room/laundry, large covered deck with a built-in barbecue and two bedrooms upstairs, including a luxurious master suite with ensuite and walk-in robe.
“It was very much built around letting all of the natural light in and a lot of the windows frame the big gum tree in the back garden,” Belinda said.
“We made sure there’s still a lot of garden out the back. There’s a cubby house and vege garden because having grass and runaround space for the kids was really important.
“It suits a family but also people who want to downsize. It’s not too massively large and it’s such an easy, quite practical and beautiful house.”
The home is being marketed by Tammy Hawkins of McGrath Estate Agents, Newcastle City.
It is set for auction on site on August 4 with a guide of $1.6 million and is open for the first time on Saturday from 11am until 11.30am.
