ST Patrick's Primary School at Lochinvar, the University of Newcastle’s NeW Space building and a Stockton home have been named winners in the NSW Architecture Awards.
The awards, honouring design excellence and innovative thinking, were presented at an event in Sydney on Friday night.
Lochinvar’s St Patrick’s Primary School’s Stage 1, by SHAC, received two honours, the Educational Architecture Prize as well as a the NSW Chapter’s Blacket Prize, recognising buildings in regional areas.

Two Newcastle residential properties were also recognised – Stockton’s Three Piece House by TRIAS received the Residential Architecture award for new houses, while an Islington Park, a house extension by Curious Practice, received a commendation in the Small Project Architecture category.
The Australian Institute of Architects said the winning projects demonstrated design excellence and among them were highly sensitive responses to the past as well as new visions.
NSW Chapter president Andrew Nimmo said the residential awards and commendations this year demonstrated achievements of design excellence at modest scales across diverse housing types.
He said this was achieved through careful integration with the existing landscape and through explorations of how people might live with comfort and amenity in densely populated urban areas.

“The NSW Architecture Awards are a celebration of design excellence,” he said. “Although they are unquestionably essential to its emergence, the realisation of design excellence depends on more than the architect's talent and industry.
“Procurement – the ways in which and conditions under which an architect is engaged – plays a critical part in ensuring design excellence is brought to life.”
In total 69 awards and commendations were handed out. St Patrick’s, NeW Space and Three Piece House will now progress to the National Architecture Awards, to be announced in Melbourne on November 1.
