On one side of Australia, they were vital contributors to Perth’s Optus Stadium and the associated Matagarup Bridge.

In NSW, the company’s precast facility played a pivotal role in the Sydney Metro Northwest producing  prestressed beams, Super Ts, wall girders, reinforced beams and prestressed planks for the project. 

According to Facility Manger Noel McCausland, Civmec produced over 18,0000 tonnes of concrete, which incorporated 398 beams, forming part of various stations across the metro link, including Bellavista, Norwest, Showground, Castle Hill and Cherrybrook.

Civmec’s trademark innovation also benefited the project, with the use of a 90m long bed as the base for production, meaning tradesmen could produce up to seven planks per day, which ultimately enhanced efficiency.

“At Civmec, we are always looking for ways to help our client with their project timeline, while reducing cost,” Mr McCausland said. 

“Our involvement in the Sydney Metro Northwest is one example of our value adding to the project, through our integrated and innovative approach.”  

This innovation extended to a modification in design when it came to internal corbels within the beams.  The beams became very complex to build, and as experienced pre-casters, Civmec suggested a modification to the design, replacing cogged bars with terminators within alternative layers to minimise congestion of reinforcement (ease of construction). 

Civmec also modified the mould for the beams which stretched to 2m height, using their inhouse expertise, and completed the production on schedule.  The company also became involved with comprehensive traffic management plans to ensure the oversized beams were delivered safely, through the services of a specialised transportation company.

Civmec’s commitment to safety saw the site remain injury free despite the magnitude of the project.

Sydney Metro is Australia’s biggest public transport project delivered across 16 construction sites, delivering eight new railway stations and 4000 commuter car parking spaces to Sydney’s growing North West, with the project designed to cater for Sydney’s population growth, expected to reach above 600,000 over the coming decades.
