IF WE can't make peace with our enemies then who do we make peace with? Maybe the greatest threat to world peace is within ourselves? If we can't make peace then we must control and isn't control of others the cause of wars? I don't think people know how to work together for the benefit of all.

I GOT a laugh out of Max McKinney's story in Topics about whether we should have a name for the light rail in Newcastle (“Should we name the light rail fleet”, Topics 18/7). Maybe we could call it Gladys, so that when it makes pedestrians, passengers or car drivers angry, we can just blame Gladys again. We are so used to that name.

IN THIS world of uncertainty, our Prime Minister should keep his head down, Trump and Putin is way out our league.
Greg Stewart, Beresfield
I THINK hypocrisy is in the DNA of Greens, Matt Ophir (Short Takes 19/7). I find it funny how recreational boaters can cause stress to whales but commercial tour boats apparently don't. You can see whales from the shore but there's no money in that.

PUTIN has shown the world how warm, welcoming and open Russia is at the soccer. Hitler did the same thing at the 1936 Olympics.
John Bonnyman, Fern Bay
MAC Maguire (Short Takes 19/7) has a point. Maybe all the hypocritical protesters should have a common means of transport. Forget about doing anything constructive for the day, pile into a solar-powered blimp mobile and proceed to disrupt normal every day activities. Nice suggestion, Mac.

MY APOLOGIES to Bob Berlin (Short takes 19/ 7). I forgot about the easy-beats, Manly and Parramatta.
Bill Slicer, Tighes Hill
DAVE McTaggart (Short Takes 18/7) it seems some people don’t like the public reminded of their Liberal Party’s long hostility to Medicare (Medibank). Abolished by them in 1981 and reinstated by Hawke in 1984, they spent the next 10 years promising to set Australia free from its shackles. It culminated with their leader promising in the 1993 election campaign to end it, learning in defeat it was just too popular to tackle head on. As we are seeing, with a slow death of a hundred cuts and dozens of changes, there’s more than one way to skin a Medicare.
Colin Fordham, Lambton
ALCOHOL plays a huge part in domestic violence, John McLennan (Short Takes 19/7). If lack of money was the main contributor then you wouldn't have doctors, lawyers and other professionals harming their wives and partners, but they do. Attitudes to women need to change, and there are no excuses.
