In the last four months Cardiff RSL has gone from using and supplying a number of environmentally unfriendly, “every day-use” items and replacing them with more sustainable and environmentally friendly options.
“Due to community concerns and major supermarkets removing the use of single use plastic bags, our business practices were reviewed in line with community and major business sustainability expectations,” a club spokesperson said.
“This is to coincide as a community change not specific to one business or industry. Through this we also aim to change our members’ and guests’ habits that will flow on to their own environments.”
Some of the club’s goals included the removal of plastic straws, foam cups, plastic cutlery and pastic bags.
“We have now introduced paper straws, paper cups, bamboo spoons, non-bleached recycled paper towels and Cardiff RSL-branded Tote shopping bags.
Other recent sustainability initiatives implemented by the club include a 100kw solar system and a waste management program with recycled glass and cardboard.
“Our achievements may seem to be on a small scale but it is a start in the right direction and becomes a ‘feel good’ moment by doing our part for the environment,” the spokesperson said.
